Riverton sits at the edge of Southland, looking out across Foveaux Strait towards Rakiura — Stewart Island — whose Māori name means glowing skies. It’s the kind of place that earns that name. We climbed Howell’s Point near golden hour, the ocean stretching out below us, the light going soft and silver over the water. We hadn’t planned on a third subject. But a fluffy white stranger had other ideas.
